Staffordshire marina pub scoops top marks in hygiene inspection

Staff and customers at one of Staffordshire’s best-loved restaurants and entertainment venues are celebrating the retention of its five-star rating following a recent hygiene inspection.

The Waterfront at Barton Marina was inspected by environmental health officers from East Staffordshire Borough Council shortly after completing a major refurbishment project which has transformed the restaurant and terrace areas.

The inspection typically examines how hygienically food is handled including its preparation, how it is re-heated, cooled and stored; the condition of the building itself including cleanliness, layout, lighting and ventilation and how the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and to maintain standards in the future.

Following the visit, the Waterfront was given the top rating of five stars which means the hygiene standards are “very good” with no areas of urgent improvement identified.

Commenting on the success, General Manager, Megan Morrish said: “We are delighted with the five-star rating. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff who are passionate about delivering the highest standards to our customers.

“This official seal of approval confirms the Waterfront is a restaurant that takes pride in every area of its business and is dedicated to providing a truly first-rate dining experience.”

The hygiene rating system is run by the Food Standards Agency, the government department responsible for food safety, in conjunction with local authorities across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Inspections are carried out to check food businesses are complying with food hygiene laws and ratings are awarded based on the findings during the inspection. The results of inspections are published on the Food Standards Agency’s website.

The Waterfront’s complete makeover of the pub interior includes a refitted bar, tile flooring, furniture and décor so that all the different areas of the establishment complement each other. To play up the wow factor, the terrace overlooking the Marina has been timber-boarded with subtle uplighters and copper gas flambeaux.

To celebrate the opening of the state-of-the-art kitchen, Head Chef, Pete Godwin, has unveiled an inspired menu incorporating fresh dishes alongside old favourites.

Exciting times at the Waterfront

If you have paid us a visit recently you will have noticed that the terrace is undergoing a transformation.

This is the start of refurbishment works which will be beginning in earnest in the New Year (more to follow)!

At the moment the old stone terrace is being replaced by a brand new decking area and the workmen are already busy levelling the area in readiness for the new flooring.

We are trying to avoid causing any disruption to our visitors but please bear with us as I am sure you will love the new look!

A life saver

Staffordshire’s landmark food and music venue is the latest pub in the county to install a heart defibrillator for the safety of its customers.

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which is used to treat people suffering from sudden cardiac arrest, has been installed in the foyer of the pub at Barton Marina.

It has been purchased by the Derby Tri Club on the recommendation of a committee member who is a consultant in Royal Derby Hospital’s A and E department but will be available to the wider community in the event of an emergency.

AEDs are designed to be used by members of the public and contain instructions which guide the operator through the process. They are both safe and easy to use.

“It’s a life saving piece of equipment and you just never know when it might be needed,” said Megan, General Manager.

“The Waterfront is very popular with hikers and runners because of majestic canal setting and it’s good to be prepared.”

“We take the safety of our customers extremely seriously and evidence has shown elsewhere in the country how valuable a life-saving tool a defibrillator can be in the event of a heart attack.”

The Waterfront is a versatile entertainment venue, catering for every occasion. It prides itself on offering good food which can be enjoyed in the restaurant, bar and lounge area and on the terrace overlooking the idyllic 300-berth marina, while the 50 seat contemporary conservatory, known as the Quarterdeck, is popular with diners and for private parties.

Food is cooked fresh to order with daily specials featuring fresh fish from the market. There are also competitively priced wedding packages suiting every budget.
